Oh mamas, I am pretty excited to share today’s small shop with you because it was love at first sight for me! Coral + Cloud is a handmade shop that carries beautiful, modern hand-painted necklaces and mobiles.

Coral + Cloud Necklace
Coral + Cloud‘s gorgeous necklaces are created using hand painted wooden beads and recycled t-shirts. Each bead is painted using three to five coats of acrylic paint and coated with a non-toxic sealer. They’re available in two sizes for both women and children and can also be purchased as coordinating mama-and-me sets. Each design is one-of-a-kind or limited edition creation, so you’re receiving a truly unique piece.

Miko is the Vancouver-based shop owner and talented designer behind Coral + Cloud. She’s always been crafty, but since having her daughter her appreciation and passion for design and color have intensified. When her daughter was younger, she didn’t have time to the time and energy to dedicate to her creative side due to a very demanding job in non-profit management. But this past year Miko decided to leave her career to spend more time with her daughter and was also able to spend more time creating.

Last Christmas, Miko made necklaces for her friends and their children and of course received rave reviews of her pieces. Although she had never set out to be a jewelry maker, Miko had always wanted to create children’s products and had felt that there was a gap in the market for modern, simple necklaces for children — designs that their mamas would like to wear too. So in May she opened Coral + Cloud carrying necklaces for mamas and littles and also expanding to mobiles.

The color combinations that Miko uses are truly beautiful and I love the asymmetrical look of each piece. It’s apparent she devotes a lot of time in the design of every necklace until she achieves just the right balance. Although Coral + Cloud necklaces are chunky, they are surprisingly lightweight and incredibly comfortable because of the cotton string.

I asked Miko to tell me something interesting about herself or her shop and I love what she shared — Miko can’t let herself use only four beads in any of her designs because it’s an unlucky number in Japanese culture. Even though she’s fourth generation Japanese Canadian, she would feel she was spreading back luck if she were to sell a necklace with only four beads. Her necklaces will never have only four beads and each mobile she creates has either three or five beads in each hoop.
